Suella Braverman, Home Secretary

We condemn the words of ‘Home Secretary’ Suella Braverman

We condemn entirely the words of ‘Home Secretary’ Suella Braverman who clearly doesn’t understand the life threatening risks to a gay person born into a country where homosexuality is against the law.

Every week our Foundation takes on new support cases where our client’s existence as a gay person puts them at risk of being killed for gay. Not just from law enforcement agencies, but their family and ‘trial by community’ too.

“We will not be able to sustain an asylum system if in effect, simply being gay, or a woman, and fearful of discrimination in your country of origin, is sufficient to qualify for protection.”

Suella Braverman, UK Home Secretary

The Home Secretary made this statement at a US think tank on Tuesday, questioning whether the application of the UN’s 1951 Refugee Convention is “fit for our modern age”. She suggested that fearing discrimination on the basis of being gay or a woman should not by itself be enough to qualify for protection under international refugee laws.

We must protest

Now’s the time we as a community must stand against Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

We must hold the UK government accountable for its growing hostility towards the LGBTQ+ community.

We will be joining Pride in London, African Rainbow Family and others in protest THIS SUNDAY 1st OCTOBER at 3pm in Parliament Square, London.

Why are we protesting?

Our Prime Minister still hasn’t banned conversion therapy.

Our Prime Minister has openly mocked the trans community and is pursuing an agenda that will make the lives of trans individuals even more unbearable.

And now our Home Secretary states that fleeing your country in fear of LGBTQ+ discrimination is not sufficient to qualify for protection.

Our government needs to support everyone, not just those with privilege, and we won’t stop until our community is protected.
