Understanding The Impact Of Coming Out To Religious Parents

Report: The Impact Of Coming Out To Religious Parents

A new report from Naz and Matt Foundation uncovers the trauma LGBTQ+ individuals experience when coming out to their religious parents.

As a charity we understand the impact parental acceptance can have on the mental health, wellbeing and safety of their LGBTQ+ children (of any age). However until now there has been limited data around the scale of the problem in the UK from the perspective of religious and culturally conservative families.

To coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day and help us more accurately understand the problem, Naz and Matt Foundation commissioned Maru/Blue, a leading polling company, to carry out an extensive survey asking more than 1,000 lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer (LGBTQ+) people across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland about their religious or culturally conservative upbringing, their ‘coming out’ experience and parental acceptance, or lack thereof.

The objective of our study was to help us understand statistically the scale of the problem in the UK. Once analysed the data collected can help us and other organisations understand where to direct resources.

The report

From the data collected we have produced a free to download report aimed at assisting professionals working in the field of LGBTQ+ abuse, honour based abuse, organisations providing support, parents and also students.

Understanding The Impact Of Coming Out To Religious Parents UK, 2020‘ reveals core challenges faced by this section of the LGBTQ+ community at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives (coming out), the negative impact these difficulties can cause and the importance they place on parental and familial acceptance.

LGBTQ+ individuals from a religious or culturally conservative background are twice as likely to feel suicidal as the result of a negative coming out experience to their parents [compared to their LGBTQ+ peers].
