The competition is named after British solicitor and former Chief Crown Prosecutor Nazir Afzal OBE who, during a 24 year career, has prosecuted some of the most high profile cases in England, and led nationally on numerous legal topics including Violence against Women & Girls, child sexual abuse, and honour based violence.

The essay writing competition is open to all persons over the age of 18 with an interest in, or experience of, harmful traditional practices, including honour based abuse, coercive control and ‘religious or cultural homophobia’.

The competition is being organised by the Honour Abuse Research Matrix (HARM), an awarding initiative from Dr Roxanne Khan and the University of Central Lancashire.
