We stand with the LGBTQ+ community, and we stand with all other members of the #Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition.
In our joint letter with the other members of the Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition, we demand that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak brings forward the legislation to ban conversion therapy as soon as possible.
We demand that ALL LGBTQ+ people are protected by law! ❤️🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈❤️
What is ‘conversion therapy’?
Conversion therapy, also known as ‘conversion practices’, reparative therapy or ex-gay therapy, is a harmful and discredited practice that attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
It is based on the false belief that being LGBTQ+ is a mental disorder or a sin that can be “cured” through counselling, prayer, or other methods such as LGBTQ+ forced marriage. Conversion therapy has been widely rejected by medical and mental health organisations around the world for its lack of scientific basis and its potential to cause serious harm, including depression, anxiety, self-hatred, and suicide.
Many countries have banned or restricted the practice, but it still persists in some parts of the world, particularly in conservative or religious communities.
Individuals who undergo any form of conversion practice are over eight times more likely to want to take their own life.
