As part of LGBTHistoryMonth 2018 I am proud, and incredibly humbled to be invited by the University of Birmingham Medical School (where my darling Naz trained to be a doctor) to deliver a talk titled “Be the person you were born to be: Homosexuality, religion and coming out“.
Proceeding my 40 minute talk I showed a short film about Naz and my experiences. My talk was followed by an open question and answer session featuring a fantastic panel of guests with individuals from from the wider LGBTQI+ community, University Chaplaincy, a young adult psychiatrist and others.
We discussed how different cultures, faiths and religions connect and disconnect from homosexuality and the struggle many inviduals experience finding acceptance from their parents.More info about the event
Update: I would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the incredible audience who donated £175 on the evening to contribute towards our important work!
Matt set up the Naz and Matt Foundation in memory of his soulmate and fiancé, Naz, who passed away two days after being confronted about his sexuality by his religious parents. It was the first time that they knew their son was gay, in a relationship with Matt for 13 years and that they were planning to get married.
